The DW-5200C – The G-Shock That Became "The Hero"
When people think of the watch that started it all, the DW-5000C naturally comes to mind. It was the original G-Shock, introduced in 1983, and the beginning of a revolution in watchmaking.
Released in June 1984, the DW-5200C-1 became the watch that brought G-Shock into the public eye. While it shared much of its construction with the original DW-5000C—including the stainless steel screw-back case, Module 240, and 200-meter water resistance—it was the model that proved the G-Shock concept to the world.

In the early days, the original G-Shock did not sell particularly well. The idea of an almost indestructible digital watch was unlike anything consumers had seen before, and Casio struggled to convince buyers. After the introduction of the DW-5000C and the WW-5100C, the future of the G-Shock project was still uncertain.
Everything changed with one unforgettable television commercial.
Casio demonstrated the toughness of the DW-5200C-1 by using it as an ice hockey puck. The watch was struck with a hockey stick, then picked up and shown to be running perfectly. When the advertisement was challenged, the test was repeated on American television—with the same result. The watch survived, proving that Casio's claims were genuine.
The commercial became one of the most memorable watch advertisements ever produced and transformed public perception of G-Shock almost overnight. Sales increased dramatically, and collectors would later give the model its enduring nickname: "The Hero."
Mechanically, the DW-5200C-1 remained true to the original G-Shock philosophy. It featured the proven Module 240, a stainless steel screw-back case, mineral crystal, and the same robust internal construction that made the earliest G-Shocks legendary for their durability.
Alongside the black DW-5200C-1, Casio also released the DW-5200C-9, featuring gold-colored graphics while sharing the same construction and specifications. Today, the C-9 is considerably rarer than the standard black version and is highly sought after by collectors.

Today, the DW-5200C-1 is regarded as one of the most important vintage G-Shocks ever produced. While the DW-5000C introduced the world to G-Shock, the DW-5200C-1 convinced the world that the concept truly worked.
Sometimes the first watch makes history.
Sometimes the second one changes it forever.
